Singapore, July 2, 2025 - Garena hosted its first-ever Garena Game Jam in Singapore, bringing together aspiring local talents in game development. Held at Garena’s headquarters in one-north from 28 to 29 June, the two-day event welcomed participants to build a playable game prototype from scratch, showcasing their creative chops, skills, and teamwork.
Garena Game Jam is an event open to gaming enthusiasts to bring their ideas to life. With a mystery theme revealed just days before, participants are challenged to ideate, code, design, and test their games within a short period of time. More than just a competition, the Game Jam is a vibrant community-focused event where creators can gather to network, collaborate, and learn from one another and industry professionals.
14 Original Games Emerge from Singapore’s First Garena Game Jam
From a pool of over 200 registrants, 14 teams of 3-5 members were selected to join the Game Jam. Most hailed from local Post-Secondary Education Institutions (PSEIs), while a handful were hobbyists who simply shared a passion for game creation. The theme, “Superhero,” was unveiled on 25 June, giving teams just three days to brainstorm and explore gameplay directions before the in-person development sprint kicked off on 28 June.
Over two intense days, participants dreamt up their superheroes, built game worlds and intriguing narratives, and tested wacky new mechanics, culminating in an exciting showcase and community voting session on 29 June. Each team presented their inspirations and development stories, sparking plenty of laughter and knowing nods as participants connected over common bugs, striking animations, and entertaining storytelling bursting with Singaporean flair.
Champion Team Ok Can!, a Family of 4, Sweeps Best Production and Best Art & Visuals
All participants voted on the 14 entries across gameplay, art, production, and alignment with the superhero theme. The heartwarming highlight of the event came from Team Ok Can!, a family of four — including two parents and their children — who stole the show with their cute and highly polished entry, Lick of Lizard. Not only did the team walk away with the main prize, they also earned awards for Best Production and Best Art & Visuals.
From Players to Creators: Sparking New Dreams Through Game Jam
For many student participants, the Garena Game Jam in Singapore marked their first foray into game jams. One first-time jammer gushed about getting to meet like-minded creators in a collaborative space and expressed hope for more community-driven events like this.
Others reflected on how empowering it felt to create their own games — a refreshing shift for youths who are often on the consumer side of gaming. For the parents of Team Ok Can!, the most rewarding part was watching their children tackle real game design challenges. It gave them a glimpse of a creative journey they may choose to pursue further.
