Malaysia, July 23, 2024 - Shopee has partnered with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) to encourage 5G adoption amongst MSMEs in Malaysia. This initiative includes a campaign offering special 5G packages through local telecommunications providers, designed to empower Malaysian sellers and enhance their digital presence.
With a robust merchant ecosystem comprising two million local sellers of Made-in-Malaysia goods, the campaign aims to empower merchants to leverage 5G technology for marketing their products and services on Shopee Live. Merchants who sign up for the special 5G packages will have access to DNB’s world-class 5G network, recognized for its speed, ultra-low latency and reliability, as well as earn RM110,000 worth of Shopee coins, helping them to facilitate stronger growth and real-time engagement with consumers through high-quality visuals that enhance the overall shopping experience.
The collaboration was announced at DNB’s My5G Portal experience center and officiated by YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital Malaysia. Mr Ma Sivanesan, Deputy Secretary General, Ministry of Digital; Encik Nasution Mohamed, Chief Operating Officer of DNB; Mr Tan Ming Kit, Chief Marketing Officer at Shopee Malaysia and Mr Terence Siau, Sea’s Country Director for Malaysia, were also in attendance.
In his remarks, YB Gobind emphasized the importance of supporting MSMEs, noting, “These small businesses contribute 38.4% of the nation’s GDP, or RM580 billion, and employ 7.59 million workers. It is imperative to ensure that the industry remains competitive and thriving.” He also underscored that partnerships like this are essential for catalyzing digital adoption across the country.
Nasution Mohamed, Chief Operating Officer of DNB, highlighted the growing 5G landscape, stating, “Malaysia’s 5G network now covers 81.5% of populated areas, with 13.2 million service subscriptions recorded as of April 2024, representing a 39.2% adoption rate. Our network’s performance enables retail MSME sellers to engage their audiences seamlessly through high-definition video streaming, enhancing the customer buying experience.”
