Sea (Thailand) launches educational board game to cultivate financial resilience in Thai youth

Thailand, December 29, 2023 - Sea (Thailand) has teamed up with Garena, Shopee, and SeaMoney to launch the 'Wishlist Game Board Allocating Money to Fulfill Dreams.' This initiative brings together experts, including Wizards of Learning, the Board Games for Learning Institute, and The Money Coach, aiming to cultivate knowledge, enhance skills, and build strong financial resilience in the youth. The board game seamlessly integrates financial planning concepts with interactive gameplay to establish a solid foundation for sound financial health in the future.

Ms. Puttawan Suphataranant, Communications Director of Sea (Thailand), shared that, "The board game is Sea (Thailand)'s initiative to extend digital financial knowledge from SeaAcademy.co to basic financial planning concepts. This initiative aims to benefit the younger generation, especially those who have been exposed to new financial innovations from young. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), financial education should begin from an early age and be integrated into the educational curriculum. Therefore, we are collaborating with various partners, including financial experts, educators, and game designers, to create a financial board game specifically for middle school students. This will instill financial concepts, enabling them to apply this knowledge in their daily lives, foster proper financial behavior and enhance their quality of life in the future."

Mr. Jakkapong Mespan, a renowned Money Coach, emphasized that "Providing financial education to the youth is akin to preparing them to face various challenges in the present and future. Therefore, this board game is designed to teach players how to think and manage their finances to achieve their goals through various methods such as saving, borrowing, cash transactions, and installment purchases. If one understands financial planning well, it will undoubtedly benefit them in the future. Thus, this game serves as a fundamental tool for middle school students to instill proper financial thinking, contributing to a secure financial future."

"In creating the 'Wishlist’ board game, our focus was on fostering financial problem-solving skills. We gathered insights from teachers and students facing financial challenges, and found that the key to solving this was in personalized financial management. The game encourages players to understand financial allocation amid life's enjoyment. There is no one-size-fits-all formula; everyone's approach to financial management can be different, and each method can be a valid answer if managed appropriately, prioritized, and planned for the long term. Therefore, our goal is to provide a hands-on experience for children to experiment with financial decisions, make mistakes, and develop robust real-life financial strategies," shared Mr. Peerat Saranurak, Learning Designer and Developer of 'Wizards of Learning.’

"The board game serves as an effective teaching aid for financial planning and facilitating open discussions about finances between teachers, parents, and youth. We are currently producing 500 game boxes and distributing them to schools and learning centers nationwide through key partners, including the Board Games for Learning Institute, InsKru (a nationwide community of teachers), and the Bank of Thailand. Our future goal is to broaden awareness and distribute this board game more extensively to schools, teachers, and specific target groups," Ms. Puttawan Suphataranant concluded.
