Shopee survey highlights development of the digital economy in Brazil

São Paulo, July 6, 2022 – Shopee has carried out a survey to understand the impact of the app on its seller community in Brazil. The survey, which included responses from 4,900 local merchants across the country, saw 6 out of 10 sellers noting that the Shopee app had made a relevant change in their lives. It also estimated that Shopee is the main source of income for more than 300,000 local entrepreneurs, and found that the platform onboarded 430,000 entrepreneurs who were entirely new to digital commerce in the last two years.

The study further revealed that women entrepreneurs make up over 55% of Shopee Brazil’s sellers. Tatiane Santos, who runs a plus-size women's fashion store on Shopee, shared how her business grew successfully with the platform over the past two years. In particular, she noted the flexible business hours which allow her to take care of her family, and added that training she received under the Shopee Education Center was essential for strengthening sales traction.

Additionally, the study found that more than 30% of sellers were able to expand their operations to other regions of Brazil, as a result of nationwide delivery logistics and benefits such as the Shopee Guarantee and free shipping coupons that attract more consumers to the platform.

“The survey shows that we are on the right path to build an inclusive ecosystem where buying and selling is accessible to everyone, impacting the lives of millions of people. We have been encouraging business digitization and driving online growth for both small and medium-sized businesses and big brands. Sales by Brazilian sellers also represent more than 85% of the total platform in the country”, said Felipe Lima, Head of Business Development at Shopee Brazil.
